LONG AFTER THE FIRE Dad and Zane built in the fireplace turned to embers and my mother and father’s snoring filled the space, I tire of staring at the ceiling as my mind continuously relives my mistake. Although I can’t really categorize it as a true mistake. At least now I know my protections only apply to letting someone continue breathing. I imagine the results if I had tried that on someone I care about. That leaves me more restless and intent on protecting those I love.

I climb to my feet and find the door that leads to the backyard. A weathered picnic table sits in the open yard, and I cross and stretch out on the top. The deep, clear night surrounds me, sending a chill around me as comforting as a wet blanket.

The vast galaxy shimmers across the moonless sky, uninhibited by any streetlight.

The creak of the door makes me tilt my head back to see who else can’t sleep. Zane crosses and takes a seat on the bench. He stares at me and bites his lower lip.

“I should be angry with you.”

I just nod, because he has the right. After all, I killed his only known family, even if he was a major dick.

“I’m not.” He crosses his arms on the table and props his chin on his hand. “The longer I think about it, the more I wish you had filleted him with your scythe.”

I raise my eyebrow at him.

“I know. Sick, right?”

I glance back at the sky. “It’s not like the thought didn’t cross my mind.”

His audible sigh reaches my ears, and I glance at him again. “You have no idea how much I just want to climb on top of you and kiss you right now.” He smiles in a way that flushes my entire body. “Among other things.” But instead of doing just that, he stretches out on the picnic table seat and stares up at the cosmos with me.

“Even with what I did today?”

He doesn’t answer and my stomach flips. If what I did alienates him, I’m not sure I can deal with that. I roll onto my side, peering down at him. He just continues staring at the stars above like they have answers we need. His gaze moves to mine.

“It hurts not being able to hold you. Weird, huh?” He attempts a light laugh, but it falls flat. “I needed you earlier. I needed your arms around me.” He shakes his head and studies my face. “And it hurt worse than my head not to be able to hold you. Hell, the more time I spend with you, the less I seem to care about whether or not I have a soul.”

He reaches up to touch my face.

My heart slams a panicked beat and I move away fast enough to jab my ass into a sliver of wood sticking up from the table. I stop the wince from hissing from between my teeth. That would be a surefire way to bring Zane right into my arms.
